Application and Rental Information
The
Athens Housing Authority creates affordable rental housing opportunities
for low-to-moderate-income families in Athens-Clarke County.
How to Apply
Families wishing to apply for an apartment with the Athens Housing Authority
must complete a written application. Applications may be obtained:
- by visiting the Occupancy office at 300 S. Rocksprings St., Athens
GA 30606
- or by calling 706.425.5300
- or by downloading the Eligibility

file). Please print the application, complete and deliver to the Athens
Housing Authority. Applications cannot be completed and emailed online.
After completing your application, please call 706.425.5300 to arrange
an appointment with a staff person. You will need to bring the following
information:
- income verification including pay stubs, bank statements, Social
Security, VA, SSI, Temporary Assistance to Needy Families (TANF), or
child support statements;
- birth certificates and Social Security cards for all family members;
- information regarding marital status such as marriage license, divorce
or separation papers.
Rents
Rent at the Athens Housing Authority is based on a choice. Families may select
a rent that is based on 30 percent of the adjusted annual income or a rent
that is based on the market rate for a comparable housing unit in the community.
This is called flat rent. If a family selects rent based on 30 percent of their
adjusted annual income, their income and family composition will be reviewed
annually. As a family's income grows, their rent will be adjusted to reflect
that increase in order to better prepare the family for entry into the private
rental market or homeownership. Families selecting the flat rent option will
have their family composition verified annually; however, their rent payment
will be stabilized for three years without income verification. After three
years, the rent will be adjusted to reflect the increase in the market value
of the housing unit.
In either rent structure, if a family's income decreases
because of a job loss or an illness, the rent payment is reduced once the head
of household reports this information to the Occupancy Office staff.

Six bedroom apartments are located in J.R. Wells and Nellie B
neighborhoods. Interior modernization has not started in these communities;
therefore, this is reflected in the rent structure until renovations
are completed. |
