Capital Improvements

The Capital Fund Program is a grant provided by HUD, based on the number of housing units available for occupancy that enables housing authorities to modernize and improve the physical condition of public housing stock in existing developments. Each year, the Athens Housing Authority receives approximately $ 2 million to complete capital improvement projects. Over the years, the AHA has utilized this program to complete major renovations at Parkview Extension and Judy Circle and Finley St., the installation of central air conditioning at Broadacres and Rocksprings, exterior renovations at Nellie B and at scattered site housing units, and exterior painting at Jack. R. Wells. Scattered site housing units located at Hill and Chase streets have been completely modernized. These 35 units now have central air and heat, dishwashers and carpeting. A landscape design plan for the Nellie B community has been completed. The neighborhood now has new bus stops, mailbox areas, newly designed entry ways, better parking, and new plantings. Check the web site for photographic updates on modernization progress.
