Basic Eligibility Requirements

We’re glad that you are considering applying for housing with us. The Athens Housing Authority provides a number of benefits to individuals and families that cannot be found in other rental communities in Athens-Clarke County. Please read our eligibility requirements. If after reading them you are uncertain about your eligibility, please call the Admissions and Occupancy Office at (706) 425-5300.

To be eligible for housing you must meet the following:

  1. Be income eligible. Family income must not exceed 80 percent of the median income for Athens-Clarke County. See chart for current income guidelines:

  2. Applicant must be a “family” as defined in the Athens Housing Authority’s Admissions and Occupancy Policy (ACOP)

  3. Be at least 18 years of age in order to enter into a contract.

  4. All family members six years of age and older must provide and verify their Social Security number or certify that they don’t have one.

  5. A family will not be considered eligible unless the Athens Housing Authority determines at least one family member is a citizen or has eligible immigration status.

In addition, the family must meet U.S. Department of Housing and Urban Development and Athens Housing Authority standards for tenant selection criteria (suitability requirements). These include but are not limited to : the standards for criminal activity; drug abuse; sexual offender status; past rental history; or, outstanding debt to a housing authority or other subsidized housing program.
