Summer Food Service Program
Families can save money on groceries this season and can be certain that they have nutritionally - balanced meals with the Summer Food Service Program. All children residing in Athens-Clarke County are eligible for the program that has serving sites in 20 different locations around the community. Most sites will serve lunches from June 4 through July 20.
Even though many of the serving sites also host summer day camp programs, children and youth do not have to participate in those programs to access the Summer Food Service Program. To attend lunch at one of the serving sites, children and youth should arrive during the time lunch will be served. Additional meals are provided each day in order to ensure that all those needing a lunch are served.
The Athens Housing Authority has sponsored the Summer Food Service Program since 1989 and organizes the serving sites and the delivery of the meals each day. Each summer, approximately 40,000 lunches are served to children and youth in Athens. The Summer Food Service Program is an activity of the Office of School Readiness and the U.S. Department of Agriculture. To learn more about the Summer Food Service Program, where serving sites are located, and serving times, call the Athens Housing Authority at 706-425-5404.
