Grow Green Coalition Honors Athens Housing Authority

On April 20, the Athens Grow Green Coalition presented the Athens Housing Authority with the 2007 Best Development Award for Infill Housing to begin the community’s weekend Earth Day celebration . The Housing Authority was cited for its use of energy efficient materials in the construction of affordably priced houses for its ACT I Homes program.  In addition, the Grow Green Coalition praised the ACT I Homes program for the redevelopment of neighborhoods located in the central part of the community near jobs and transportation routes.

The Athens Housing Authority has constructed and sold 13 houses to first-time homebuyers of moderate incomes through the ACT I Homes program.  The ACT I Homes program has helped increase homeownership rates in in-town neighborhoods and aided with the redevelopment of those areas.  During the next several months, four more ACT I Homes will be built.

Charlie Gluodenis, Director of Construction and Affordable Housing, was presented with an original painting by local artist Jamie Culkin.  The painting is of an ACT I Home located near the Athens Housing Authority’s office.
