First Lady Sandra Deal Kicks Off Summer Lunch Program
Georgia First Lady Sandra Deal kicked off the Summer Lunch Program at the Nellie B community on Thurs., June 4, 2015 with a proclamation from Governor Nathan Deal honoring the work of the Georgia Department of Early Care and Learning and the administrators and providers of local summer food service programs.  The Georgia School Nutrition Program, Georgia Food Bank Association, Arby’s Foundation, Bright from the Start, and the Southeast United Dairy Industry Association sponsored field day activities for children and youth attending the Summer Food Service Program at Nellie B.

Matt Bosher, punter for the Atlanta Falcons, also attended and talked about the football team’s commitment to making sure all children have nutritional food and are active.  Mrs. Deal and Mr. Bosch helped distribute lunches and talked with children and youth and encouraged them to stay active and eat well.

The Athens Housing Authority has organized the Summer Food Service Program for 25 years for the community.  Typically, lunches are served at community centers and summer day camp and tutoring programs.  Children and youth not enrolled in the program may still obtain the no cost lunch by just letting staff know that they will be attending for lunch each day.  The Athens Housing Authority will serve about 40,000 lunches at 21 different sites around the community this year.
